Before Week 8 to do

ISSUE
Language is a gateway into understanding culture.  NZ is in a unique position, where recent years (find research to back up) there has been an explosion of immigrants and tourists. We are lucky to live in such a multi-cultural nation, with our only common denominator being our spoken identity. Accent is always a common denominator of locality therefor I would like to visualise the spoken identity of NZ culture to international visitors through the function and vocabulary.

OBJECTIVE
My objective is to aid international visitors with an authentic experience of New Zealand culture. By using language and its subversive power, I would like to better communicate our distinct and unique attributes to international audiences coming to New Zealand. Visitors are able to actively engage in New Zealand culture as well as genuine and meaningful experiences through the use of language and pure, simple and undressed conversation. I would like to use information design to educate overseas visitors on our unique way of speaking and provide them a gateway into New Zealand’s identity through everyday conversation.

Immigrants to NZ is my target audience. I would like to introduce NZ culture through words and language as a gradual process of adapting into NZ experiences. I have chosen not to specify an immigrant group as language integration would work the same for all under the assumption that immigrants come over with a basic understanding of English.

HOW
Scholastic Inc. is a book publishing company. It is the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books as it is known for publishing educational materials for schools, teachers, parents, and children. The corporate mission of Scholastic is to encourage the intellectual and personal growth of all children, beginning with literacy, the cornerstone of all learning. English Language Development (ELD) is the systematic use of instructional strategies designed by Scholastic to promote the acquisition of English by students whose primary language is not English. ELD strategies support this learning method, enabling students to acquire English language in a manner similar to the way they learned their native language, naturally and through regular interaction with others who already know the language.

ELD focuses on four skill areas:
Function, Form, Fluency and Vocabulary.
I would like to appropriate the ELD learning strategy, with focus on Function and Vocabulary, to ____. Functions are the purposes of communication. This includes social conversations, jokes, and inquiry. Vocabulary is the development of a wide and varied vocabulary is essential. English language learners should be taught key vocabulary, or brick words, prior to a lesson in order to assist them in their language development. For example, whatever concept you are teaching, it is recommended that you include vocabulary words that will make the content more comprehensible to the learner.

Next steps:

– Topic/ issue relating to the topic
– Contextualisation of topic/issue- airport? educational kit? public library?
– Theory for examining topic/issue- Williams, Debord
– Analysis of art/ design precedents;- visual research

How does their work inspire you (or not inspire you)?
How does their visual language relate to your’s?
